My dad's M, that was bought new, is a 53 model according to the serial number. The rear casting is a letter code for 54 or 55. I thought that was very unusual. But after thinking about it for a week, seems that dad told me they left a pair of pliers in the rear end when it came out of the shop at IH one time. It ran all year just fine. Then when cold weather hit the stiff oil picked up the pliers and sent them thru the bull gears, breaking the rear housing. I'm not absolutely sure it was this tractor but I remember him telling me the story. He is not here anymore so I can't ask him. I'll just assume that's the reason the castiing letter is different.
