Date code and serial number mis-match

I have a Farmall M, serial number 32741. The date codes I have found end in 'L'. The serial number decodes to 1941, and the date codes decode to 1942. The serial tag does not seem to have been removed. The engine has been replaced with another M engine, serial number 24147, date code 'J'. These codes match up to 1940. Could a letter have been skipped between J and L? I know the parts could not have been cast in 1942 and the tractor built in 1941. Could the serial number list be wrong?
