Richard, I have a 53 Super MD so I'll try to answer some of your questions. In my case, the older diesels are alright, a little awkward to start sometimes. You have to be careful when you shut them down, if they are too hot then I believe they have a tendency to crack the head. The owners manual I bought from the CASE dealer has start up and shut down procedures along with plenty of other stuff. They do have spark plugs, but when you pull the lever on the left hand side, it closes them off. I don't know much about how a diesel works, but I do believe it is just the compression and the heat of the cylinders that keeps it running. I really don't know about the efficiency. I don't run that much fuel through mine, I only use it to run around and do light work. I'm sure someone else would know this a little better than me and please correct me if I'm wrong in anyway. I hope this makes sense and isn't too long. Josh
