Farmall M Diesel

I'm looking to buy an M diesel. I have had many diesel vehicles in the past and own a Dodge cummings now. How are the older farmall diesels. They start with gas and run on diesel. I guess they have spark plugs. When they are running on diesel do they use compression only, or still use the spark plugs for ignition? Are they as efficient as todays diesels, or are they simply a gas engine able to run on diesel?
