Sounds like the wiring is messed up on your M. The output wire (BAT terminal on the alternator) should connect directly the "-" or "generator" terminal the ammeter - there should be no switch in the line.

If you really have a Ford-Motorcraft alternator on your M, punch below for a wiring diagram. (Scroll down to about the middle of the page for the Motorcraft diagram....)

Regarding the coil, go to any parts store and get a generic 12 volt coil - the cheapest one you can find will work fine. Won't hurt to replace the condenser too, though if the tractor was running when the coil failed chances are the old condenser is still OK.
