6V battery charger.

I bought a new 6V battery for my BN today from my Case IH dealer. He said I should "slow" charge it before installing it. I borrowed my neighbors charger but the lowest 6V setting is 10A. After 10 minutes or so of charging the I can hear the battery sizzling and I smell a sulfer smell. The gauge shows I'm charging at 9A. Is the sound and smell normal? Am I over charging my new battery? Dave BN.
