As I recall in their advertising, they plugged all the larger gaps between the gears. There always was a huge gap between 4th and 5th. They filled it - as well as giving closer ratios between the other lower gears. I guess the tractor could be more efficient if, for example, you wanted to use a gear somewhere between two existing gears. I remember many times when plowing, where I wished I could make a half a gear change. I really don't know if this conversion paid for itself - and how long the payback took.
