Sounds as if the exciter circuit on the alternator is wired to the ignition circuit. Not a bad arrangement, but if it is wired directly, the alternator feeds back enough current to continue to power the ignition. For today, you can idle the engine and stall the tractor by holding the brakes and releasing the clutch in high gear. For cure of the problem, install a resistor between the alternator exciter terminal and the coil. Use about a 5 watt wirewound of 25 to 44 ohm resistance. This will limit the curent feedback to a value lower than the ignition requires to operate, but still furnish enough for exciting the alternator. Bob M has excellent diagrams posted. Some use a lamp for the exciter circuit-I prefer the resistor because it does not burn out.
