I'm restoring a 47BN and it's a couple of weeks yet before I'll be ready to try to fire 'er up. Things are going well, I've got the books for specs etc., and I'm prepared to trust the instructions for timing the magneto by hand (that turn of the crank after lining the rotor up to No. 1 with No. 1 at TDC has me mystified). My first question is about hooking up my trusty and treasured old dial/needle tach to set high and low idles without frying it. The only place it seems it might make any sense to hook up the hot lead on my tach is to the ground screw on the side of the mag. What kind of voltage is there. I assume/suspect it may be low enough there if it grounds just the points and is between the points and the coil. Am I thinking straight, is that a safe point to hook up my tach? Second qwuestion isn't as critical. What are the coil cover and cap made of? They're both old enough to have that nice old IHC logo on them and of course they're weathered to a gray, but I'd like to save them and brighten them back up. (I know I'll have to put a new cap on if the contacts are no good). Are they bakelite? Hard rubber? I'm thinking of Armorall or, if they're hard rubber, maybe some of the tire paint Miller Tire sells. Any knowledge, hints, experience there? TIA Scotty

From the engine number, it was found that the major was produced late 19
