David when the starter engages, does it engage & then hang up? I mean just stop? Or does it keep running & sound like it is slipping on the ring gear? Can you turn the engine over by hand easily with the hand crank? You can remove the starter & check the ring gear teeth through the starter mounting hole to see how much wear you have on them. If they look good & the starter is not slipping on the teeth, I'd say it was a starter drive problem...If it is slipping on them I'd say ring gear. The ring gear in it's self is not that expensive 30 bucks or so. But the tractor does have to be split to replace it. Hope this is of some help......Steve
