You should have 7 volts across the battery when it is fully charged and the engine is running. Without a voltage regulator, you might have to settle for the 7.5 to 8 volt charge voltage and the higher amperage that will go with it. Just keep an eye on the battery water level. It will use water if you keep putting that 7 amp or greater charge into a fully charged battery.
