Charging questions on 6 volt?

Well after not running for nine months (I have been fixing a few things) I have got my Super A running again (these Farmalls never stop amazing me). One of the problems I set out to fix was the electrics. As the ammeter wasn't working I have no idea what was happening before. Today I put the rebuilt (not professionaly) ammeter back in to test it. I started it up and the gauge pegged on the positive side. It slowly came down a bit to inside the range (with the engine idling). I also measured almost 8 volts across the battery terminals with a multimeter. This is a 6 volt system and was wondering what your thoughts were on the seemingly high charging rate?
