Doug - I agree - sounds like the battery got installed wrong. Since virtually ALL domestic 12 volt alternators are negative ground, and hooking the battery up backward (even for an instant) will ruin the alternator, good chance the alternator now on the tractor is NG. Best plan is to replace the alternator, then be sure to reconnect the battery with the negative side grounded.
