farmall h carb packing nut?

i have a 1942 farmall h with a gasoline engine and I am in the process of rebuilding the carb and when I took the packing nut out ( goes between the main adjutment needle and seat) it was completly crushed. I put the new one in and crushed the new one while tightened down the brass fitting that goes above it. I was wondering should I have put the needle in before I tightened the brass fitting down? Do IH dealers sell this packing nut seperatly or do i have to buy a whole new kit? How tight does the brass fitting have to be? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks Bob
