Dutch, yes there where shims, for the carrier & I even had to make some extras to get the preload right, the only spacers I can recall on the pinion,(if memory serves me right) are between the gears & pinion bearing? I belive the engagement between the gears where equal, The backlash the rocking (play between 2 gears were propably .005 or little less I don't have an dial indicator. ( I hope I don't appear stupid) I've ask some old mechanics for help they were busy or other wise not interested. Thanks Dave F.
