these motors had no timing chains in them, it was all gear drive. So the key theory sounds the most logical to me. And while I am typing, it seems that a key that sheared would have also worn the keyway somewhere along the line too... I would fix any worn keyways with JB weld, unless you have enough bucks to buy new/used camshaft/gears/etc.
