The dual fuel tractors (distillate) had a second fuel tank, hence a hole above the oil filter for the fuel tank neck. Lots of tractors were not dual fuel, and do not have the hole. It sounds like yours was one of these. Farmall tractors were not produced by model year. Changes were not made for a certain re-tooling dates like cars (except Ford which has a better idea several times each model year). The serial number lists just tell you what year your tractor was assembled. Lots of changes were made to M's in late '39 or early '40 but for the most part an H is an H and an M is an M. Dual fuel, gasoline, high altitude, LP and diesel were options produced at the factory most years. LP was also a field conversion as was high altitude. It is more proper to say "I have an H produced in 1940" rather than "I have a 1940 H" which is like saying I have a 1968 child. I have a child born in 1968, no model year.
