I'll throw something out on this one, because I would like to see more thoughts on it also. No, you don't "need" a resistor if the coil has been converted to 12 volt. But a lot of people, including myself, put a resistor between the 12 volt coil and original distrubitor. I am "assuming" the points will then still be running on 6 volt and not get burned up as fast. I ran my Super A a couple of years without a resistor, but when I tuned it up a few months ago, I put in the resistor. Can't see, hear, or feel any difference. I will add, my Super A has an alternator, but I have had generators changed to 12 volt as you have on yours, and the answer is the same. My friend has two resistors on his Cub. One for the 6 volt lights and they work great. Maybe we both can get tweeked on this.
