Just on the subject of diesels running out of fuel, what I do is whenever I hear the engine even begin to think about sputtering, I turn it off. Then you can put fuel in it, and with only a little cranking, get it going halfway, and then it will bleed itself while running. I have to admit, I have also seen ether used to get a diesel going - only small spurts just big enough to keep the motor turning though, and into the air cleaner intake, so that it got good and diffused before reaching the engine.
