806 D runs out of fuel

I know of someone who was using an 806 D and let it run out of fuel and what really bothers me is how they got it running again. Normally if it was me I would have bled the system and then started it (well if it was me i wouldn't let it run out of fuel in the first place because the guage still was working). What really made me cringe was the fact that they got it running on ether first until the fuel got to the injectors. Now Im no diesel mechanic, but I really think that cant be good for it. Is that really a wise way to start a diesel engine that ran out of fuel?
