I'm not sure this is your problem or not, but I have also had problems with mine that sounds like it. I find that the stub on the shifter rod that moves the shifter clutch forward to engauge it onto the clutch shaft gets a flat spot after years of pushing the shifter clutch back and forth. Doing it while the engine was not running, it worked perfect. (or so it seemed) I bought a new shifter rod one time and it cured the problem. I experimented with the old one and built it up with S.S. welding rod. Now when that happens, I put in one that I built up. I have 2 ready to be put in at any given time. When I build one up, I work it down with a good 8" file until it is 1/16th" longer and 1/16" larger in diameter, then polish it with very fine sandpaper.
