I'm hoping you will get a better answer than mine, but here it is. The PTO clutch is "approx." 1 1/2" long and has a grove about 3/8" deep and about 3/8" wide around the whole circumference that the clutch pin that I told you I built up rides in. The I.D. of the PTO clutch has splines that match the clutch shaft splines exactly. When you push down on the spring lever and push it toward the rear to engauge the PTO, you are autualy pushing the PTO clutch forward and around the clutch shaft so that the PTO clutch is half on the PTO shaft and half on the clutch shaft. In escense, the PTO clutch is a coupling like on a water pipe used to couple the 2 pieces together. Thats why the clutch shaft can't be turning when you engauge it. When the pin wears down, it won't push the PTO clutch (coupling) far enough toward the clutch shaft to push it over it. It just catches the splines on the very edge of the PTO clutch and as the clutch shaft starts turning, the splines are on the edge so to speak and make a lot of noise barely touching each other. Disclaimer: All measurements in this post is a guess only.
