Jeff: Errors can be had by not keeping slight pressure to make sure all clearance is at the plastic gauge location and not half the clearance split from one side to the other. A little pressure to keep all clearance located at the plactic gauge is best. More important on checking the heavy crankshaft where its weight will tend to hold the gap on top side. Gene
