Ah, yes. The farmall 504 steering was not IH's finest moment. The hand pump on the dash, the unit that has the hoses, supplies the power. The shaft running to the front end has too many u-joints that make too many sharp turns. It sounds like your hand pump is bad. Chech all the u-joints, keyways, and bearings on the steering shaft--they should be tight. There is a front gear box. You should check its oil level every once in a great while.
