The last guy glued both sides of the gasket with something indestructable. Some times a little heat, (heat gun)will help but usually it comes down to bull strength and ignorance. A very thin chisel or heavy putty knife can be tapped into the split, a little bit here, a little bit there, all the way around, and eventually it should give up. Once it starts to move, you can pry on it, but keep your tool near the outside edges. Sometimes a good shot sideways with a heavy hammer will do the trick, strike against a piece of wood or a big chunk of brass, not directly on the casting.
