966 shifting problems

I am going to look at a 966 to buy, the man who has it says that it goes into gear hard real hard when setting still but shifts fine when moving a little. What am I getting into, any one know what is wrong with this tractor? He said it does not grind but acts like linkage is bound up but has put some new linkage on it.
