Do it right. You will find that the original seal has cut a groove in the axle shaft. If the new seal lands in this groove your leaks will most likely still be there. I'm a little crazy about my restoration work but if I can't position the new seal so that the lip rests on virgin shaft I put the shaft on the lathe and turn it down (in the area of seal contact only) to the next standard seal size. If the inner seal is done right, the outer is fairly irrelevant since the outer bearing is only greased.
