As far as I know , all f-20s with shutters got gauges. What they used before shutters was a canvas curtain that rolled out from the bottom and hooked into the holes in the cast iron radiator sides. you could check the temp by hand and see if the lower elbow is luke warm. If you put that gauge up higher on the engine you will cook the gauge (spike the needle badly)since it is calibrated for the cooler water down low.
