F-20 temp. question

After seeing the post below on F-20 shutters and temp. gauge, I have a question. My F-20 has a temp gauge but no shutters. The temp. gauge pickup is in the lower water elbow. On a thermosyphon system without shutters, it never warms up down there, and the gauge is pretty much useless since it never reads above the lower stop. I'm thinking about drilling and tapping a hole in the upper water manifold and relocating the gauge there, where it will give a more accurate picture of the engine temp. If a stoppage or other problem arises in the cooling system, isn't that a better place to have it, since it would give you more warning of excessive temp. before the whole system got hot to the point of making the gauge indicate? I know the purists won't like this, but it sure seems more useful. Any thoughts, opinions, comments etc.??? Anybody else done this?
