What model are you working on? Is it positive or negative ground? If your points are closed and your key is on, the coil will get hot. How many volts do you have a the points? With the resistor you should have around 6 volts. This reduction helps keep your points from getting burnt. Get a volt meter, check it out and get back to us.

Also check your volts at the points when you are cranking your engine, it should be 12V if you have a 2 pole solenoid on your starter.
