Coil problems

I thought my old coil was bad. So I bought a new coil, ingition and stupid looking resistor. I hooked up the resistor and coil just like the instructions. My problem is that my new coil is hot on the ground side. I made sure my testlight was grounded also. I know that will burn up my new ingiton that I haven't hooked up yet. My tractor is 12v and so is the coil.
