If the valves end up being set too tight, they will not close completely. This will cause a decrease in performance and can result in burned valves because the valves cool when they are sitting on the seat in the head. Check and double check your clearances and be sure that the engine is HOT when you set clearances because the book says HOT, not warm like idling around the yard for a while. Had the same problem with the SMTA, we set the valves when the engine was warm instead of hot. Cured the problem for me. Steven
