Rear Axle C Farmall

Just pulled the top plate off my 1949 "C" because of a bad knocking noise in the rear end. It was a dead tractor and I just got it running. The Rt axle has a plate and cap screws as shown in the I&T manual. The Lt axle has a retainer ring and no provisions for a plate and cap screws. Where does this axle come from? No visable indication of where the clunk is coming from. None of the gears are missing teeth. Have to pull and check the differential. So far, everything is pretty tight for a fifty year old tractor.
