BLEW that PTO

I restorred Dad's 44H a few years back, added a saganaw 3 point and now my famly uses the ol H quite a lot. I was out bush hogging the other day and hit a stump and the bush hog quit spinning, thought the engage lever just jumped out of track or something but no, when I pulled the PTO and drained the oil there were 4 large chunks of gear laying in there and the shaft tube was split! All this inbetween the bull gears, I am surprized it doesn't have a shear pin somewhere. So while I have it apart do you suggest putting in 2 seals where the shaft comes out? Watch out for them stumps!
