424 differential lock

I am trying to remove the right side pinion bearing cage and cannot get it to slide off of the brake shaft. The I & T manual shows a retainer but I cannot figure out how to get to it to remove it. The diffential shaft sticks out of the brake shaft and has a rounded end that is encircled by another sleeve all of this fits inside the brake shaft. How do I get this apart?
