How hard to load 656D

I used the 656 Diesel to mow hay last night. I usually use a bigger tractor so I wasnt sure how hard to load it down. What rule of thumb do you guys use to know how hard to load down a tractor. The tractor would blow some smoke, but the RPM would only vary about 100 RPM off PTO speed, and it wasnt running any hotter than normal. I want to get the max use of my time, but I dont want to abuse the tractor either. My dad also claims he could "smell the tractor" when he was sitting on the porch. The injectors were just redone so they shouldn"t be dumping tons of extra fuel. Maybe the pump needs work, or is this normal?
