How hard to load 656D

I used the 656 Diesel to mow hay last night. I usually use a bigger tractor so I wasnt sure how hard to load it down. What rule of thumb do you guys use to know how hard to load down a tractor. The tractor would blow some smoke, but the RPM would only vary about 100 RPM off PTO speed, and it wasnt running any hotter than normal. I want to get the max use of my time, but I dont want to abuse the tractor either. My dad also claims he could "smell the tractor" when he was sitting on the porch. The injectors were just redone so they shouldn"t be dumping tons of extra fuel. Maybe the pump needs work, or is this normal?

our 656 gas will pull a 9.5 foot New Holland disk mower/conditioner (non swing so no hydraulic motors) in 3rd gear in meadow hay and possibly even old canary grass. use the TA on the turns just right and you really can make 'em square. even in 2nd it is still cutting hay faster than the old 230 windrowers ever could (or tractor with mower). i've hardly had it encounter overload situations unless someone runs a round bale through or something really weird like that! temp gauge stays in the 1/4 to 1/2 range. i think if you can keep a 656 in 2 or 3 doing a job, you are doing just fine with it. -karl f

If you have it at full throttle and it is pulling down below PTO speed, then that would be overloading it...

Our tractors are always blowing smoke - and they have turbos. Can't afford bigger and better things so what we have will need to earn its keep. Haven't wrecked any of them yet... but they will start to run hot if you really over do it.

What mower are you pulling that makes a 656D work? Must be a mower-conditioner...

He could smell it, how? Diesel exhaust smell? Burned oil smell?

Diesel exhaust has a strong odor and if the wind is just right, of course he could smell it.

If the tractor is handling the load, then you are not overloading it. They were designed to be worked at 100% capacity or more day in and day out for decades. You will not hurt the tractor.

Only pullen down a 100 rpm is not over loading it now if ya are pullen it down to 12-1300 rpm all the time then this is overloading it . A diesel will blow some black with out a turbo charger and some of them will when the govener opens up to fight to hold RPM. Try runnen it up a 100 over PTo speed as this will only add a few RPM to the pto and should not hurt anything. Just watch your engine temp as a woring diesel runs her best at around 190-200 . Then newer stuff is running hotter then that.
