Pat, if the carb is set too rich or theres an inlet air restriction cuz the air filter is clogged or the chokes not full open she can black smoke out the stack which can foul plugs fairly easy causing hard starts or a miss. If you havent already its not that expensive to install new plugs (gap correctly) n points n condensor and then adjust the carb n see what happens. In the meantime you may get by to clean the plugs n clean n re gap the points n adjust the carb leaner n see what happens. None of this is rocket sciene or very expensive, a good general ignition tune up n carb adjust may well be all you need John T
