Good advice below. However also it's good practice to remove the plugs and squirt a tablespoon or so of motor oil into each jug before attempting to start an engine that's been sitting a long time. Or good blast of WD-40 in each jug will work too.

Reason: Until the crankcase oil gets flowing and flung up to the cylinders from underneath, dry cylinder walls may not let the pistons develop enough compression for it to start.

Also when the engine DOES start you will be rewarded with an impressive (though brief...) cloud of blue smoke to amuse bystanders.
