6v / 12v question

My tractor has a generator, which the previos owner thinks is a 6v. However, it was running on a 12v battery when it last ran, and it has a voltage regulator (square in the back of the block)
Could a tractor have a mix of 6v / 12v? He is throwing in a new 6v battery he never used, so I am going to make the system 6v. But how do I check the generator? Could this be a cause of the tractor not running?
