Dave & Wardner: I think what R1, R2, R3, etc indicate are different production runs of the same part. Just recently some of us got into this subject on SA, SC, 100 and 200 engine blocks. SA after serial number 310000 and SC start off with 354898 R1, and by the end of 100-200 production the number is 354898 R3. I"ve run across a few of these tractors in between those dates with 354898 R2.
