Use a simple (some what old fashoned) Tach Dwell meter on the distributor primary wire (goes to the points)and ground. Reads rpm directly, cost about 20-30$.

Use a strobe shaft tach (probably rentable, or more expensive), but very useful for "no connection necessary" speed monitoring. They work on any moving mechanism or shaft.

Use a shaft tach on the belt pulley or PTO and do the math to determine engine speed. Still some fair cost, or rent.
