diesel fuel

Does anyone know if diesel fuel can break down with age to the point it will not burn in a diesel engine? I'm working on a 6 cyl IH gas over diesel engine. It runs fine on gas but switching to diesel, it does absolutely nothing. Just dies.
Both fuel filters have been changed and the pressure gauage on the pump reads 55 lbs. pressure.
When I say it just dies it does, not one fire, no exhaust, not even one little fart.
The fuel in the tank is 8 or 9 years old. is it possible this is the problem?
Any help on this or things to check on the pump will be greatly appreciated.
