Removing steering gear on a M

I would like to remove the steering gear on my farmall M to seperate the steering shaft from the front bolster for a painting. I have removed the castle nut but can not remove the gear. My repair manual says to use a puller which is obvious except for the fact that there is no roonm to get the jaws of the puller on the back side of the gear. Anyone had luck removing a stubborn steering gear. I have already broke the castle nut trying other options so I think will ask before I go further. Thanks for all your replies.
