The growling in low TA position may be an indication of the problem. The pinion gears and bearings are the only additional parts moving while in TA rather than direct drive position. Direct drive is accomplised by locking the TA carrier with the pinion gears to the TA input shaft which in turn drives the transmission input shaft all as one unit. A failure of the pinion gears or either shaft gear will cause a condition of no drive through the TA in either position of the lever. Remove the TA clutch inspection cover and see if the TA clutch is turning when the engine clutch is engaged. That should allow you to determine if the problem is in the TA or engine clutch.
