You should not have to "go into the transmission" to replace seals in the liftall. The liftall is out of the tractor, sitting on your workbench at this point. Do you mean the transmission input shaft? Just give the retainer a bump with the butt end of a wooden hammer handle and it will fall off in your hands. It's stuck down from being there for 50-some years.
