I've never heard of a 2-speed rear axle in a FAMRALL. M&W Gear Co. and HEISLER made an Over-Drive unit that went in place of the constant mesh gears in H's & M's but I wouldn't really call them rare. What these units did was reduce the reduction ratio of the costant mesh gears to increase the RPM the gears in the transmissions turned so You ended up with a 540 and about 1100 RPM PTO's and the hydraulic belly pumps also turned faster which increased hyd. flow. The lowest 4 speeds were the same as before the O/D was installed and then You shifted into O/D and the new 5th gear was high 1st, 6th was high 2nd, 7th was high 3rd, 8th was high 4th, and 9th was your old 5th speed. What this did was give You 4 speeds between the old 5 MPH 4th and the 16 MPH 5th. On M's I think the speeds were about 6-1/2, 7-1/2, 9, and 11 MPH. I'm not sure about the Heisler, but on the M&W shifting from high 4th into 5th automatically shifted the O/D back into direct if I remember right. Dad had one in a '47 M that He traded off when I was about 5-6 yrs old. Tractor didn't have powersteering so I didn't get much "Seat Time" on that tractor!
