If it's not on a running tractor, I would take it to a shop that does that kind of work and have them test it. As far as telling what sort of regulator you have, sometimes they have it written on the bottom. Yes, it does make a difference what you use. You need to match the voltage of the system and the polarity(pos or neg ground). Good Luck
