How do you check a voltage regulator?

I have a voltage regulator that is not mounted off my Oliver 440. It is not running at the present time. How do I check this regulator to see if it is good, or needs replacing. It was mounted on top of the generator. This tractor is 6 volt. I have another regulator that came off a Farmall that I might be able to use, but I also need to check it. I do not know what voltage it is used on. Is there a way to tell what voltage the regulator is for or does it make a difference?
Sorry if I am confusing. Electrically challanged!
