Most newer Japanese and Korean cars are now equipped with much smaller alternators. So is some imported farm equipment - e.g. a friend has a Deere industrial mower with a Kubota(?) gas engine. It's got a 30 amp Denso alternator that's no bigger than a pair of stacked hockey pucks - perfect to tuck under the hood of an H. (Because it's a Deere it's probably a $200 part however!)

I think also Denny's Carb Shop catalogs a "mini alternator". Don't know anything about it except it's expensive...
